Do you love coffee and art? We found a way to enjoy both at the same time
Latte Art is the answer as it brings you artsy creations with your favourite beverage…
Trevor Hyam, head barista at The Plan Café (one of our favourite hangouts we have covered in this blog) in Cardiff, says that freepour latte art is an “indication of skillfully made coffee and good quality.” We love it because it is nice to look at and you certainly need skills to pour these designs into a cup.
He says it takes years to learn how to freepour patterns because you have to get the texture of milk right first. Watching him pour some cups, there’s no doubt that it would take a while to learn it…
Still in case you want to try free-pour coffee art at home, all you have to do is follow these easy (?) steps:
- Preheat cups and prepare one or two shots of espresso
- Foam up milk to the right texture (Trevor zealously guards his secret methods… we tried to find out, honestly!)
- Pour milk into cup slowly and gently make left to right movements and – as a last step – divide lines to get a leaf pattern…
Check out how it’s done properly:
Good luck and enjoy!!
Maybe you’ve already spotted latte art in some coffee shops around the world?! Please let us know where you’ve seen your favourite designs…
The pictures show Trevor creating some lovely latte art! Many thanks again!

Hiya,
Nice post and pictures – thanks for the mentions – glad to help with some demos and info for your post.
Not my best ever patterns/pours, but then, I’m a perfectionist …and it was just one single take, afterall, so not bad I guess!
Glad you liked X
Thanks to you, Trevor!! We really appreciated your help! Glad you like the pics and the post
